The NAC Conference and Expo runs October 13 through 15 at Paris Las Vegas. We will be there. So will most of the people you would want to talk to, and a fair number you would not.

One clarification first, because Las Vegas is busy that month. This is not the NACS Show. That one runs October 6 through 9 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and it is the convenience and fuel retailing show. We wrote about it back in August and we will be there too. NAC is the following week, a different venue, and it is the one built specifically for independent ATM owners and operators. If you only go to one, and you run a fleet, go to this one.

We could spend this post telling you what is in our booth. Instead, here is something more useful: how to get real value out of two days on a show floor, including from us.

The Trade Show Problem

Everybody at a trade show is selling. That is not a complaint, it is the format. You walk a floor where every single person is incentivized to tell you their thing is good, and by the second afternoon it all compresses into one long sentence about uptime and partnership.

The operators who come away with something did one thing differently. They arrived with a specific problem and asked everyone the same question about it.

Not "what do you do." You can read that on a website. Something narrower, something that only has an answer if the person actually knows their platform.

Five Questions Worth Asking Anyone

These work on us. They work on our competitors. Use them.

When exactly does my money land, and what stops that from happening? Anybody will say next-day settlement. The follow-up is the real question. What is the cutoff time, what happens over a weekend or a bank holiday, and what is the most common reason a settlement gets held? A processor who cannot describe their own exception cases has not thought about yours.

Show me the screen where I create a terminal ID. Not a slide about the portal. The portal. Ask them to do it in front of you. You will learn more about a terminal management system in ninety seconds of watching someone click through it than in an hour of feature comparison, and you will find out whether the person at the booth has ever used the product they are selling.

What is your position on the Visa EJ mandate, in specifics? Electronic Journal compliance is not optional and it is not one-size-fits-all. There are meaningfully different paths depending on whether your terminals can send EJ records themselves, and they carry different costs, different retention terms, and different consequences for dispute representment. A vendor who answers "we handle it" is either simplifying for the floor or has not read the rules. Ask which option they are putting you in and what it does to your ability to fight a chargeback.

What happens when a terminal goes down at two in the morning on a Sunday? Every answer to this is either a process or a dashboard. Find out which. A dashboard tells you about the outage. A process ends it.

Who actually answers the phone, and where do they sit? The least technical question on the list and often the most predictive. Support is where processing relationships succeed or fail, and it is the one thing you genuinely cannot evaluate from a booth. So ask for names. Ask how long they have been there.

What We Are Bringing

Hardware you can put your hands on, because a spec sheet has never once told anybody what a machine feels like to service. Same commitment we made for the NACS Show, in a room where nearly everyone walking past owns terminals.

People who can answer the five questions above without going to find someone. That is a deliberate staffing choice, and it is the only booth promise in this post.

And a straight conversation about the things that are genuinely in motion right now. EJ compliance and what the options actually cost. Jackpotting and cash trapping, which have changed the security picture more in eighteen months than the previous ten years. Recycling, which has stopped being exotic. Foreign exchange and dynamic currency conversion at the locations where they make sense, and honesty about the ones where they do not.

Get Something Out of the Week

A few things that are true of every show and that almost nobody does.

Book the conversations you care about before you go. The good half hour with someone who knows your portfolio does not happen if you show up hoping to catch them. It happens because it was on a calendar in September.

Bring numbers. Terminal count, rough monthly volume, your two worst-performing locations and your two best. Every useful conversation on that floor bottoms out in specifics, and the vendors who can help you will start asking within five minutes.

Go to the sessions. The expo floor is where you compare vendors. The sessions are where you find out what is coming, and in a year with an active compliance mandate and a shifting crime profile, that is the part that changes decisions.

And talk to other operators. The single most valuable conversation most people have at NAC is not with a supplier. It is with somebody running a fleet the same size as theirs in a different state who has already solved the thing they are stuck on.
